KHN Center for the Arts presents “Stitching the Spirit of Nebraska – works by Cassia Kite”

July 16, 2018 @ 8:00 am - August 24, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

Exhibition runs July 6 – August 24, 2018.

A Gallery Talk will be held on July 19 at 5pm in conjunction with KHN’s monthly Third Thursday Artist Talks from 5-7pm.

Raised in Auburn, NE, Cassia Kite is an interdisciplinary artist who created Soundstitching, a multimedia project that transforms color from hand-stitched images into musical compositions that can be interpreted by musicians, performance artists, or anyone who can read music. Kite’s work premiered at KANEKO in Omaha, Nebraska in July of 2017 with a large-scale collaborative work for chamber ensemble and dancers using color-coded scores derived from her hand-stitched tapestries. She has been featured as an experimental
composer and visual artist in music festivals, museums and universities.

“Stitching the Spirit of Nebraska features all Nebraska-based works that are intended to honor my history and personal narrative as a native Nebraskan. The works within this exhibition pay homage to places that have been and still are a part of my life. It pleases me to honor the spirit of these spaces through translating their energy into song.” -Cassia Kite

This unique exhibition combines hand-stitched images, sound, augmented reality, and interactive opportunities to engage with the work. Don’t miss this innovative exhibition and your own chance to collaborate and interpret one of Kite’s stitch-inspired works on a toy piano.

Originally from Auburn, Nebraska, Kite is a Visual Art Instructor in the Fine Arts program at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida and resides in Sarasota, FL. Kite is currently a KHN resident through July 13, 2018.

Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is located at 801 Third Corso in Nebraska City and is regularly open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and by appointment. Both the exhibit and the reception are free, handicapped accessible, and open to the public.
