November 13, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free, no reservations, open to the public. Questions? Call us at 402-873-5609.
Set in 1950 in Julian, Nebraska, this novel explores what happens when an African American railroad repair crew is dropped into a tiny farm community. Will frictions build to an all-too familiar American tragedy, or can tensions be overcome in that uniquely American way, with balls and bats and a field of green? The book is based on real events. Jon will talk about his research, including interviews with dozens of local citizens during his two residencies at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center, and about his creation of a gripping novel that exists somewhere between myth and memory.
Jon Volkmer grew up in Nebraska City, son of Ronald & Mildred Volkmer, who owned the Julian grain elevator. He has an MA in creative writing from Denver University, and a PhD in English from UNL. He’s been a Professor of English at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania for more than thirty years. His other books include a travel memoir, Eating Europe, a collection of poems, The Art of Country Grain Elevators, and a young adult biography of Roberto Clemente. His stories, poems and essays have appeared in more than sixty publications.
