Antique Cider Press Demonstration

If you ventured into a general store back in the late 1800s, it would have been common to find a cider press for sale. Many homesteads like Arbor Day Farm had apple trees, and the press allowed them to turn over-ripened and less-than-perfect fruit into a delicious drink. Come see an antique cider press up close and watch as we turn fresh apples into that wonderful golden liquid.

Demonstrations take place at the Carriage House behind Arbor Lodge Mansion Saturday, Sept 24, and Sunday, Sept 25 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There is no cost for this activity.

All Dolled Up: 100 Years of Victorian Dolls

Come see a rare display of Victorian and vintage dolls and furniture at Wildwood Historic Center. Dolls on display span 100 years from the early 1870’s to the 1970’s, including our Dolly Madison doll and Mrs. Beasley from the popular TV show “Family Affair” in the 1960’s. We have baby dolls from the 20’s – 50’s as well as several foreign dolls from Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. We have over 30 dolls and strollers, chairs, beds, a sleigh and a tea table with a tea set! We also are having a doll giveaway. There are 4 wedding themed dolls from the 1940’s that we will be having a drawing for.

National Quilting Day is March 20!

To celebrate, Arbor Lodge Mansion will host a special exhibit featuring quilts from the Arbor Lodge collection. In addition, award-winning, best-selling novelist Stephanie Grace Whitson will join us for a special presentation on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Author of The Shadow on the Quilt, Whitson will utilize quilts, blocks, and quilt tops from her personal collection to pay tribute to our pioneer foremothers. Her presentation includes readings from pioneer women’s diaries, reminiscences, and unpublished archival papers. Whitson will be available for signings and to visit with guests throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Native American Artifact Show

The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center is hosting its annual Native American Artifact Show on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This year’s show will feature authentic Native American artifacts from a number of private and public collections. Visitors will be able to see some of the finest examples of spear points, arrowheads, tools, and pottery in the Midwest. Kids can enjoy hands-on activities like making clay pottery and corn husk dolls!

This presentation is a compilation of excerpts from primary documents in which Native American women’s comments, pleas and advice have been recorded, from the earliest records of negotiations with the colonists to contemporary women, including professionals, artists and activists. In a series of readings, interspersed with background material, it explores the way native women have spoken out in political, social and spiritual settings in humor, pathos, anger and celebration, passing their legacy to the next generation.

Nancy S. Gillis is the former Executive Director of the John Neihardt State Historic Site and the Neihardt Foundation’s Institute for Vision and Learning. Nancy joined the Foundation as Assistant Director in May 1997 and retired in 2014, joining its Board of Directors, and speaks to schools and civic groups on Neihardt’s work and a variety of related topics. Since 1992 she has served as faculty at Wayne State College, Northeast Community College, Nebraska Indian Community College, and Little Priest Tribal College teaching Native American History and Cultures, U.S. History, World History, Anthropology and Sociology.

Of Cherokee and Choctaw heritage, Gillis moved to Nebraska in 1987 to work with the Winnebago people for the Reformed Church in America and has served as their delegate to its Native American Council and the Commission for Race and Ethnicity.

Father’s Day Exhibit at Arbor Lodge Mansion

Your dad will appreciate the special Father’s Day exhibit at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park on Father’s Day weekend, June 16–17. View historic photographs of Morton family fathers and sons. Plus see a special display featuring Joy Morton’s sword collection, many of which were purchased during his world travels. These unique, old-world treasures reveal detailed craftsmanship.

WWI Exhibit & Vintage Flags Display at Arbor Lodge Mansion

Join us Memorial Day Weekend at Arbor Lodge Mansion for a special display featuring vintage American flags of the Arbor Lodge collection. The flags will be displayed throughout the mansion where you’ll also discover exhibits honoring Morton family and local WWI veterans and commemorating events of 1918.

Mystery at the Mansion at Arbor Lodge

Spend an enjoyable evening sipping iced tea and mingling with new friends while playing a part in an interactive murder mystery at Arbor Lodge Mansion. Guests can participate as much or as little as they wish as the group uses clues to find out who did it! Participants are provided with a variety of props and costume pieces. Feel free to come dressed as the millionaire you may end up playing. Adults only. Reservations required at 402-873-8717.

Living History Weekend – Pioneer Days at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park

Step back in time to see historic trades, talents, and other demonstrations come alive inside the mansion and out on the beautiful grounds of Nebraska City’s National Historic Landmark.

Pioneers of many ethnic origins traveled their way to Nebraska. Join us September 23 and 24 as we celebrate the rich heritage of our ancestors with demonstrations and displays including vintage farm equipment, rag dolls, kitchen gadgets, and frontier education.

Come to the Fair at Arbor Lodge

“Come to the Fair” at Arbor Lodge, home of J. Sterling Morton, and get a glimpse of the Morton family’s involvement in the organization of the Nebraska Territorial and State Fairs. View original fair documents, certificates, and awards, plus check out a variety of award-winning 2017 Otoe County Fair entries. Celebrating Chautauqua at Arbor Lodge

Circuit Chautauqua first came to Nebraska City in 1907. This year, it returns June 21-24, featuring guest speakers and entertainment at various locations around the community. The theme for this year’s Nebraska Chautauqua is “World War One: Legacies of a Forgotten War.” In addition to the community’s Chautauqua celebration (presented by Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska City Chautauqua committee), Arbor Lodge will host additional activities including historical displays and entertainment June 24-25.
