Native American Artifact Show

The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Visitor Center is hosting its annual Native American Artifact Show on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This year’s show will feature authentic Native American artifacts from a number of private and public collections. Visitors will be able to see some of the finest examples of spear points, arrowheads, tools, and pottery in the Midwest. Kids can enjoy hands-on activities like making clay pottery and corn husk dolls!

Nancy Gillis presents “The Voice of Native American Women

This presentation is a compilation of excerpts from primary documents in which Native American women’s comments, pleas and advice have been recorded, from the earliest records of negotiations with the colonists to contemporary women, including professionals, artists and activists. In a series of readings, interspersed with background material, it explores the way native women have spoken out in political, social and spiritual settings in humor, pathos, anger and celebration, passing their legacy to the next generation.

Nancy S. Gillis is the former Executive Director of the John Neihardt State Historic Site and the Neihardt Foundation’s Institute for Vision and Learning. Nancy joined the Foundation as Assistant Director in May 1997 and retired in 2014, joining its Board of Directors, and speaks to schools and civic groups on Neihardt’s work and a variety of related topics. Since 1992 she has served as faculty at Wayne State College, Northeast Community College, Nebraska Indian Community College, and Little Priest Tribal College teaching Native American History and Cultures, U.S. History, World History, Anthropology and Sociology.

Of Cherokee and Choctaw heritage, Gillis moved to Nebraska in 1987 to work with the Winnebago people for the Reformed Church in America and has served as their delegate to its Native American Council and the Commission for Race and Ethnicity.

International Mud Day at Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure

Did you know getting outside and playing in the mud is not only fun, but it’s also beneficial?!

Get your hands dirty and play in the mud to celebrate International Mud Day on Saturday, June 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tree Adventure. Make mud paintings and sculptures, squish your toes in the mud, and investigate different types of soil (a change of clothes is recommended).

Peach Pickin’ Party!

It is prime time peach picking, so we are having a Peach Pickin’ Party!

Join us Saturday for pick your own peaches, hay rack rides, live music, wine tastings, lunch from the kitchen and other delicious peach goodies in the Apple Barn! Pre-picked peaches will also be available for those who prefer not to pick.

Plus, face painting and a balloon artist for the kiddos!

There will also be select blackberries and bubble gum plums (they literally taste like a piece of bubble gum!) available for picking as well!

At the Tree Adventure:
Take a springtime stroll through the woods for family-friendly games, plus a leisurely seek-and-find egg hunt. Children will enjoy chicks, bunnies, ducks, and lambs at the Tree Adventure. Easter activities included with regular Tree Adventure admission. The Tree Adventure is open Easter Saturday, 9am–5pm; Easter Sunday, 12pm–4pm.

At the Apple House Market:
Sip Arbor Day Farm wines and shop for flavorful jams, jellies, salsas, and more. The Pie Garden Cafe is also open for apple pie and other tasty treats.  Open Easter Saturday, 9am-5pm; Easter Sunday, 12pm-4pm.

At Arbor Lodge State Historical Park:
Enjoy a close-up look at the life and legacy of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day. The mansion is open for self-guided tours; admission is $7/adults; $4 youth (age 3-12). Arbor Lodge mansion is open Easter Saturday, 9am–5pm; Easter Sunday, 1pm–4pm.

Third Thursday Open Studio

Join us every third Thursday of the month from 5 to 7 pm!

Visit the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts and meet our current artists-in-residence during our Third Thursday Open Studios. You will be invited into the visual artists’ studios, the writers will give short readings and the composers will share either performances or compositions.

KHN normally has five artists-in-residence every week and they may stay any length between two and eight weeks.  They are selected twice a year through a competitive application process.

Gnome Hunt at the Tree Adventure

Reindeer Chase & Make-and-Take Ornaments at Arbor Day Farm Tree Adventure

It’s a celebration of all things holiday, Saturdays this December at the Tree Adventure at Arbor Day Farm. Get into the holiday spirit with fun traditions and activities including:

> Free hot apple cider while you shop and hike the trails

> Make-and-take ornaments, 11am to 3pm

> Look high and low for Santa’s wooden reindeer along the trails (all day, on-your-own activity)

Honeycrisp Harvest Party @ Kimmel Orchard

We are excited to be opening up U-Pick this Thursday, so we thought we’d celebrate with a HONEYCRISP HARVEST PARTY this weekend!

Everyone’s favorite apple is now available and it is prime time for picking HONEYCRISP!

We invite you to visit the Orchard to pick your own apples, enjoy lunch from the Kimmel Kitchen, listen to live music, sample our 12 wine varieties and browse the Apple Barn for all of your favorite goodies! We will of course have fresh baked pies, apple doughnuts and caramel apples available as well!

Honeycrisp will go fast, so don’t hesitate to pick your favorite variety while you can!

U-PICK — “HOW IT WORKS!”
We are excited to announce that have built a BRAND NEW barn where ALL U-PICK will now take place. It is located just north of the two main buildings. It is the one with the RED TIN ROOF!

So, how it works:
• Head to the new U-Pick Barn…remember it is the one with the RED TIN ROOF!

• Once there, there will be a $2 per person admission (little ones 2 and under, free). This is where you will get your bags for picking.

• We will have hay rack rides available on Saturday’s and Sunday’s where you can enjoy a ride to the apple trees.

• After you have picked your favorites, make your way back to the U-Pick Barn, and this is where you will “Weigh & Pay” for your freshly picked apples. Apples are $1.75 per pound (except Honeycrisp…those are $2.50/lb.).

• And then, the only thing left to do is enjoy…and then go home and make some yummy desserts, of course!

Stargazing Fun Night @ Kimmel Orchard

Join us for an evening under the stars as we team up with our partners at the Kimmel Education & Research Center for our first ever STARGAZING FUN NIGHT!

Stargazing Fun event details-
5:30PM – Telescope Workshop: build your own telescope with Extension Educator Dr. Deb Weitzenkamp! (See further details for workshop below.)

6:30PM – Grill & Chill at the Kimmel Pavilion: Food and Drinks will be available for purchase. Also enjoy free hay rack rides around the Orchard as we wait for the movie to start!

8PM – Outdoor Movie “October Sky” PG: Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets!

AT DARK- Telescope Viewing and iPad Apps: Some telescopes and iPads will be available to share, but you are welcome to bring your own!

It’s going to be an event filled, fun and educational evening for the entire family!

Telescope Workshop Details:
Hey kids come early to the Stargazing Fun event at Kimmel Orchard and “build your own telescope” with Extension Educator Dr. Deb Weitzenkamp. Workshop fee $20 if you register by August 19th and $25 at the door. Space is limited!

For more information and workshop fee call Kimmel Education & Research Center 402-873-3166. This workshop is in conjunction with the Stargazing Fun at Kimmel Orchard. Nebraska Extension educators and UNL Astronomy students will be here to assist with telescopes and iPads.
