Celebrating 100 Years of UNL Extension during AppleJack Festival

Kimmel Education and Research Center is celebrating 100 Years of UNL Extension during this year’s AppleJack Festival in Nebraska City to be held on September 20 from 9 AM- 5 PM & September 21 from 10 AM – 4PM. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s extension educators and staff will host a variety of free and educational activities during the two-day celebration.

Edible  OMAHA and Lexicon of Sustainability Pop-up Art Show will be featured during AppleJack this year. Edible OMAHA celebrates the local farms, foods and community season-by-season by connecting consumers with where their food comes from.

Big RED Talks exhibit welcomes questions about agriculture, food, leadership, youth, health, extension and more. Tell us what you know! Through your contribution of video selfies, Big Red Talks is shaping how UNL Extension is meeting the needs of Nebraskans.

Help us name our Happy Orchard App characters at the 2014 AppleJack event. Try our Fruit & Veggie Piano, Human Circuit Board, and Electrical Photo Booth! All ages will enjoy the Makey Makey electrical fun.

Several more free educational activities and programs will be available to the public. Help preserve our state’s natural beauty by learning about Nebraska’s invasive plants, insects and aquatic creatures. Learn about cooking with Nebraska apples from an extension food specialist. Realize the impact of insect pollinators, pests, and natural enemies on orchard crops. Beekeeper in a Box will be buzzing with knowledge about bees and provide some ukulele music between demonstrations. For a tasty treat, the UNL Food Science & Technology Club will be selling UNL Dairy Store ice cream outside in their mobile trailer. Middle and high school students and their parents might like to learn about the 29 degree programs and 2 professional programs offered by the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. A CASNR recruitment coordinator will assist in matching students’ interests and career goals.

The UNL Kimmel Education and Research Center represents a unique public-private partnership between the Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard Educational Foundation, Inc. and the University of Nebraska.  It is located at 5985 G Road, Nebraska City, Nebraska, next to the historic Apple Barn at Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard, northwest of Nebraska City.
